About The Timber
Holly timber is a very hard dense fine grained hardwood, and the whitest of all timber species with virtually no visible grain pattern. Knots
are common, which can reduce the usable area of the wood. It can develop a bluish/grey fungal stain if not dried rapidly after cutting. Holly
is usually cut during the winter and kiln dried shortly thereafter to preserve the white colour of the wood. Its also felled in many gardens in
the UK. The interest in recycling & reuse and the rising price of timber may motivate some to re-use felled wood. This is especially true for
holly, a timber with a unique appearance and very high price tag.
It is a good timber for turning, with its fine grain and toughness taking detail very well, and its eye catching colour. Small sized garden holly
is well suited to producing handles & knobs.
Historically holly was used for chariot axles, food skewers and wooden printing blocks, all applications benefitting greatly from its
hardness. It was also used in Victorian looms; it sands to a very smooth surface, minimising the risk of thread catching.
-------------------------------------------
This pen is constructed from timber. Being a natural material each piece is unique in colour and figuring, which will slightly change colour
and darken in time. The pen may be smooth to the touch or you may be able to feel the grain, blemishes and faults in the wood under the
finish. Pens that are really smooth, with no blemishes are made of plastic!
Each pen is made using sustainable or recycled timber and top quality components. Once turned and sanded, to give the best possible
protection it has up to ten coats of finish and then a polish. It comes complete in a velvet sleeve, full instructions on the care of the pen and
a certificate of authenticity, confirming that I have turned the pen personally and in most cases the date it was constructed.
